Heat exchangers deployed in petrochemical processes get contaminated and will have to be cleaned periodically in order keep functioning effectively. Heat exchangers can also seize shut during an emergency stop.
The thermal cleaning of heat exchangers is an ideal solution to clean optimally and increase the operational capability.
Using thermal cleaning heat exchangers can be cleaned. Also known as pyrolyzing or burning out. A special approach is required in order to clean heat exchangers. They are costly and often very large pieces of equipment. The temperature distribution during the cleaning process must be highly accurate.
This is necessary for example to prevent distortions to the tube bundle.

Different types of heat exchangers exist. U-tube exchangers, tube exchangers, but also whether the bundle is open or shelled, makes a difference.
By analyzing the product to be removed, we can establish a safe procedure. A Product Data Sheet, or MSDS, can be sufficient.
By using a TGA (Thermogravimetric analysis) it is also possible to establish degradation and weight reduction during temperature increase of the product to be removed. Should the basic materials of the product be unidentified, a GCG analysis (gas chromatography) can be carried out.
